Start on the North Island in cosmopolitan Auckland, and you can make your way down to riverside Hamilton, just 40 miles west of Matamata (the home of Hobbiton). From there, follow the route south to Wellington, the island’s capital and cultural hub. Venture across the Cook Strait on the Interislander Ferry and you’ll be able to swim with dolphins at Kaikoura, tour Christchurch’s pretty scenery and explore the South Island’s western coast from Greymouth.

Part of being on holiday is knowing you can do what you want, whenever you want. So the Scenic Rail Pass is perfect. It allows you to hop on and off any long distance train service, at any station, or the Interislander ferry, as many times as you like for the duration of your pass.
